SMSC and British Values
At Rivington and Blackrod High School, we are committed to helping students become confident, respectful and responsible young people who are prepared for life beyond school. Through our curriculum and wider school life, we support students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and promote the fundamental British values.
These experiences help students understand themselves and others, make informed choices and contribute positively to their communities.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
SMSC development is part of everyday school life. We encourage students to:
- Develop self-knowledge, confidence and self-esteem.
- Understand the difference between right and wrong.
- Build positive relationships and respect different viewpoints.
- Appreciate different cultures, faiths and beliefs.
- Take responsibility for their choices and actions.
- Participate positively in school and the wider community.
British Values
The fundamental British values are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. At RBHS, students explore these values through lessons, assemblies, opportunities to share their views and their daily experiences at school.
Democracy
We encourage students to have a voice and take an active part in school life. Through the student senate, questionnaires and surveys, students can share their views and contribute to decisions that affect them.
Through subjects including history and PSHCE, students learn how democracy works in the UK and how people can participate in democratic life.
The Rule of Law
Our school expectations help students understand the importance of rules in creating a safe and respectful environment. Students learn why laws exist, how they protect people and the responsibilities we all have towards others.
Through lessons and assemblies, students also explore the role of the police, courts and other public institutions.
Individual Liberty
We encourage students to make informed choices and develop their independence within a safe and supportive environment. Through PSHCE, citizenship and wider opportunities, students learn about their rights and freedoms, the rights of others and how to exercise these responsibly.
Mutual Respect
Respect is central to positive relationships at RBHS. Students are encouraged to listen to others, consider different perspectives and treat everyone with dignity.
Through the curriculum, assemblies and activities such as Anti-Bullying Week, students explore the importance of respect and learn to recognise and challenge bullying, prejudice and discrimination.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Through Philosophy and Belief, RE and PSHCE, students learn about different religions, cultures and beliefs. They are encouraged to understand and respect people whose views differ from their own, including those who have no faith.
We aim to create a school community where everyone feels welcome and where differences are discussed thoughtfully and respectfully.
