Pupil Premium
At Rivington and Blackrod High School, we want every student to have the opportunity to succeed, whatever their background or circumstances. Pupil Premium is additional government funding that helps schools improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged students.
We use this funding to address barriers to learning and support students’ achievement, wellbeing and participation in school life.
Who is eligible?
Schools receive Pupil Premium funding for students who meet the government’s eligibility criteria. This includes some students who are eligible for Free School Meals, or have been eligible in the past six years, and students who are or have previously been in care. Separate funding is available for eligible children of service families.
Free School Meals eligibility has expanded from September 2026. If your household receives Universal Credit, your child may now qualify for a free school meal even if you did not qualify previously. Eligibility for a free meal and eligibility for Pupil Premium are assessed under different criteria, so we recommend checking the current guidance and applying if you think your child may qualify.

How We Use Pupil Premium
Our strategy focuses on three areas:
- High-quality teaching: Supporting effective teaching through staff development and evidence-informed practice.
- Targeted academic support: Providing additional help where students face barriers to learning.
- Wider support: Addressing factors that can affect achievement, including attendance, wellbeing and access to opportunities.
